What is CTC tea, and why is it used for chai?
CTC stands for crush, tear, curl, the process that turns tea leaves into small, even granules. The granules release colour and body quickly, so a milk chai stays strong and coppery instead of turning pale. That is why CTC is the tea behind most Indian chai, and why every blend on this page is CTC.
Which Swachh chai is the strongest?
For a strong plain cup, start with Premium CTC Chai. If you like it very dark, Pure Dust Tea's finer granules colour the cup fastest. For a strong spiced cup, Strong Masala Chai and Strong Elaichi Chai are both made on strong CTC tea.
Do I need to add my own spices to the masala and elaichi blends?
No. The spices are already blended with the tea, so brew them exactly like plain chai. If you like it sharper, add a little fresh adrak in the last minute.
How much tea should I use for one cup?
2.5g, about a level teaspoon, for a 150ml cup. Boil 75ml of water, simmer the tea in it for two minutes, add 75ml of milk and simmer two minutes more, then add sugar in the last minute and strain.
How many cups does a 250g pack make, and what does a cup cost?
About 100 cups at 2.5g a cup. Across this range, the tea in a cup costs between about ₹2.2 and ₹6.5, compared with ₹15 to ₹30 for a cup at the tapri.
Which chai is best for guests or festivals?
